No Bilbo Baggins

For the last two days I’ve been in New Zealand. It has been raining almost all the time and I haven’t seen any hobbits. This is not what the adverts had led me to expect.

On Sunday I watched the end of a world championship triathlon in the pouring rain. J R R Tolkein never mentioned the triathlons, but it does seem like the sort of heroic competition that he might have created. Jonathan Brownlee barely looked out of breath as he crossed the finish line in second place (he had been in first place for most of the running, until the Spaniard sneakily sprinted past him at the end).

The sun finally appeared in the northern sky over Auckland as I boarded my taxi to the airport. I hope it will follow me to Sydney.
