‘Tis the season to be misanthropic

The first Christmas card arrived this morning. Like red and green carrier bags and special festive cups at Starbucks, it seems too early. I haven’t even cleared away my tomato plants by the back door yet.

Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but I always sense a competitive edge in the earliest Christmas cards. As if the card not only wishes us a happy Christmas, but also says “I am very organised. You are not. I intend to enjoy a serene festive season because I will not have to fight my way through crowds of shoppers or stay up late sticking on Christmas stamps in order to catch the last posting date”… As I say, I may be reading too much into it.

One year I attempted to be organised. I bought a chocolate log early in December. Then discovered that the ‘best before’ date was two weeks before Christmas Day. That was demoralising.

Maybe I will go and get a Christmas tree tomorrow. I will use it to block up the letterbox until the 24th of December.
