Silver lining

In 1986…

a litre of petrol cost about 38 pence. The Bank of England base rate at the end of the year was 10.88%…

News International was the subject of intense media interest and public protests … following the sudden move of newspaper publishing and printing activities (including the News of the World) from Fleet Street to Wapping…

The London Stock Exchange introduced computerised share dealing following deregulation. Apple unveiled the Apple Mac Enhanced with 512K RAM. The Internet Mail Access Protocol was released, which led to the wider adoption of email, eventually. Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook, celebrated his second birthday in May…

Bob Dylan married Carolyn Dennis (no, me neither). Prince Andrew married Sarah Ferguson. Bob Geldof married Paula Yates. Arnold Schwarzenegger married Maria Shriver…

I was given three points on my driving licence for speeding in a 30mph limit. I was fined £37, which was slightly less than the value of my Fiat 128…

An Anglo-French plan to build a rail tunnel under the English Channel was announced…

Top Gun and Crocodile Dundee were on at the cinema and Madonna reached UK number one in July with ‘Papa don’t preach’…

Chernobyl nuclear plant exploded. Mikhail Gorbachev and Ronald Reagan made a breakthrough in nuclear weapons negotiations between the USA and the USSR and Gorbachev introduced some limited political and market reforms in the Soviet Union under the banner of ‘perestroika’…

And in Norfolk Miss D. became Mrs R. at our wedding on a wet Saturday in July.  Exactly 25 years ago.

A lot can change in 25 years, but I love her every bit as much now as I did then.

Congratulations Alex (and Mrs R.)! I’m (just) a little behind you in terms of years of marriage, but I certainly felt a bit older reading about what was happening in the world 25 years ago!

Sounds like you’re in a good place, Alex. Congratulations to you both.

    Congratulations to both of you.

Time for a usless piece of information on the subject:
If you are married on a Saturday as the majority of people are in the UK, your 25th anniversary will alway fall on a Tuesday.

….unless, as I was, you are married less than a year before a 29th of February, in which case you’ll squeeze in an extra ‘leap’ day in those 25 years, so I’m fully expecting my 25th anniversary to be on a Wednesday….

Thank you all for your congratulations. Alex’s post makes it seem as if 1986 was in another era but 25 happy years have flown by and, washing lines aside, I think I’ve been exceptionally lucky.

  6. Congratulations to you both!
