Aloho ho ho

The Christmas party had a Hawaiian theme. I had a flower garland placed around my neck before joining the other 700 revellers, at 4 o’clock in the afternoon on the sun-drenched terrace overlooking the river.

The weather, the sunlight, the heat and the view were not what I am used to at an office party. But after the beer and wine had begun to flow it felt more normal. I had several rambling conversations in which I explained that I was from England and not interested in cricket. The conversations veered into a variety of topics including: the role of enterprise systems architecture, corporate use of iPads, data centre design, IT outsourcing, agile systems development, continuous release management, data migration and project prioritisation. I felt quite at home with 700 IT professionals who had enjoyed a few drinks.

Meanwhile, across the river, the wickets fell swiftly. The Barmy Army sweated and sang. The locals cheered. And Christmas drew ever nearer.

And when you get back to Norfolk, you’ll find winter has truly arrived. The ground is sort of white, there’s a north wind and traffic on the untreated roads is crawling along. I hope you packed your thermals for coming home.
