Test match special

24Nov10

The first test match starts today here in Brisbane. I was offered a ticket, but I explained that I would not be able to feign an interest in cricket for a whole day (and I only get paid if I am working), so I declined.

English cricket fans have appeared in the city. They are mostly plump gentlemen with slight sunburn choosing good wines in the restaurants or gathering outside the bars on the riverside and talking in loud voices. Like all England sports supporters they appear optimistic and cheerful, but have faces etched by disappointment.

The English media are also in town. I spotted at least one flamboyant TV personality in a restaurant last night. He is normally a horse racing correspondent, so perhaps he is on hand as an expert in gambling.

As I write this the clouds are gathering over the cricket ground for an early morning shower. There is a good chance that the opening ball will be delayed by rain. The English contingent should feel at home.
