Doors to manual

21Nov10

At Heathrow I stood in a queue waiting to board a plane. Right next to the boarding gate was a large TV showing 24 hour rolling news. As we waited, the live BREAKING NEWS story was about a plane crash at Birmingham airport.

It was hard to ignore the breathless live report from the scene. The excited reporter spoke of fog, a crash, burning wreckage and casualties being pulled from the cockpit.

I peered out of the window at the gathering mist. And shrugged at the coincidence.

8 hours later at Dubai airport I got stuck in a lift with four other passengers as we headed for our next departure gate. The lift did not have a TV. It had glass walls and buttons that were restricted for security purposes.

Eventually someone spotted us and released us with a swipe card. Our plane was only slightly delayed.
