Tale of the unexpected
19Jul10
Against my better judgement I approached the self service till to pay for my lunchtime sandwich.
“SOMETHING UNEXPECTED IN THE BAGGING AREA!” bellowed the machine. “SOMETHING UNEXPECTED IN THE BAGGING AREA!”
I looked around for something that I might not expect next to the carrier bags. What could it be? Perhaps it would be…
A penguin?
A mathematical proof?
Some granite?
Winston Churchill?
Two dozen dragon’s eggs?
An oilwell blowout preventer?
World peace?
A glistening turd?
A song?
Pieces of moon rock?
Shrapnel?
A newborn baby?
But all I could see was my sandwich. I had expected the unexpected to be more exceptional. I picked it up. The machine calmed down and the rest of the transaction proceeded as expected.
